Glaresis
Sign in to saveGlaresis is a genus of beetles, sometimes called "enigmatic scarab beetles", in its own family, Glaresidae. It is closely related to, and was formerly included in, the family Scarabaeidae. Although its members occur in arid and sandy areas worldwide (except Australia), only the nocturnal adults have ever been collected (typically at lights), and both the larvae and biology of Glaresis are as yet unknown. Due to their narrow habitat associations, a great number of these species occur in extremely limited geographic areas, and are accordingly imperiled by habitat destruction.

Glaresidae je čeleď brouků příbuzných čeledi scarabaeidae . Členové této čeledi jsou nalézáni ve vyprahlých a písčitých oblastech celého světa (kromě Austrálie) a sbíráni byli zatím pouze dospělí jedinci (většinou na světlo v noci) a život ve stadiu larev zůstává nepoznán. Brouci jsou malí, 2½–6 mm dlouzí a mají zavalitý vzhled typický pro scarabaeidy. Barvu mají od tříslové po tmavě hnědou a zadeček pokrytý krátkými chlupy. Pokusy vypěstovat glaresidy v laboratorních podmínkách, prováděné v 80. letech C. H. Scholtzem a dalšími, byly neúspěšné. Rod Glaresis byl původně začleněn do čeledi Trogidae a má hodně znaků "primitivních" scarabaeoidů, avšak žádný vztah k ostatním primitivním skupinám; současné práce dokazují, že ve skutečnosti patří spíše k mezi trogidy. Scholtz argumentoval, že rod Glaresis je nejprimitivnějším typem ze scarabaeoidů, ale současné výzkumy ukazují, že jsou to Pleocomidae, kteří převzali tuto pozici.

Glaresis is a genus of beetles, sometimes called "enigmatic scarab beetles", in its own family, Glaresidae. It is closely related to, and was formerly included in, the family Scarabaeidae. Although its members occur in arid and sandy areas worldwide (except Australia), only the nocturnal adults have ever been collected (typically at lights), and both the larvae and biology of Glaresis are as yet unknown. These beetles are small, 2.5–6 mm long, and have the stocky appearance typical of fossorial scarabs, with short, heavy, spurred legs. Color ranges from tan to dark brown, and the back is covered with short setae.
