Die Echsenaale (Halosauridae) leben mit 16 Arten in drei Gattungen weltweit in der Tiefsee. Der Name kommt aus dem Griechischen und bedeutet „Meerechse“. Die Tiere sind allerdings keine Echsen, sondern Echte Knochenfische.
