Hamlet jest jednym z najczęściej granych utworów teatralnych, a rola Hamleta – ze względu na objętość tekstu, dużą ekspresję i bogatą osobowość postaci – uważana jest za sprawdzian dojrzałości i umiejętności aktorskich. Z Hamleta pochodzi jeden z najpopularniejszych monologów, zaczynający się od słów „Być albo nie być”. Umieszczone w poniższym opisie imiona bohaterów i cytaty pochodzą z tłumaczenia Józefa Paszkowskiego.
