Helheim, auch Hel genannt, altnordisch Helheimr, ist das Reich der Totengöttin Hel. Vermutlich ist sie Namensgeberin für das englische Wort „hell“ (deutsch „Hölle“). Übersetzt bedeutet Hel so viel wie „versteckt, verborgen“ (vergl. das Verb „verhehlen“)
