L'ematite è un minerale del ferro (un ossido), abbastanza frequente in natura, appartenente all'omonimo gruppo. Il nome deriva dal greco αἷμα (haîma) - "sangue", dal colore rosso sangue che talvolta assume il minerale allo stato cristallino, mentre la sua polvere è sempre rossa. Secondo lo storico Teofrasto, la pietra sarebbe simile al sangue solidificato.
