Herman Goldstine

Herman Heine Goldstine was an American mathematician, computer scientist, and university teacher. Born in Chicago in 1913, he earned a Doctor of Sciences degree from the University of Chicago. His professional career included positions at the University of Michigan, the University of Chicago, the Institute for Advanced Study, and the United States Army, where he participated in World War II. He served as a professor and held memberships in the National Academy of Sciences, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Philosophical Society, and the Phi Beta Kappa Society.

Goldstine received several honors, including the IBM Fellow title, the National Medal of Science, the Harry H. Goode Memorial Award, and fellowship in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He authored seven works, such as *A History of Numerical Analysis from the 16th Through the 19th Century* and *New and Full Moons, 1001 B. C. to A. D. 1651*. He died of natural causes in Bryn Mawr in 2004 due to Parkinson's disease.
