La sobremodernidad (del francés surmodernité) o, según el autor, hipermodernidad (del francés hypermodernité) es un concepto acuñado por el antropólogo francés Marc Augé para referirse a la aceleración de todos los factores constitutivos de la modernidad, del siglo XVIII y XIX. En la sobremodernidad, se tiene una relación nueva con los espacios del planeta, y una individualización nueva. También se conocen tantos acontecimientos a través de la televisión, y de los medios de información en general, que tenemos la sensación de estar dentro de la Historia sin poder controlarla. Es decir, se desarrolla a la vez una ideología del presente –porque el pasado se va muy rápidamente y el futuro no se imagina-, y este presente está siempre cambiando.
