De roestbruine kogelzwam (Hypoxylon fragiforme) is een zakjeszwam, die behoort tot de familie Xylariaceae. Het ruwe, kussenvormige met papillen bezette, steenrode tot kaneelbruine vruchtlichaam is 4-10 mm groot. Bij het ouder worden wordt het vruchtlichaam bruin tot zwart. Het harde stroma is van binnen bruinzwart tot zwart. Op het vruchtlichaam worden sporenzakjes met ascosporen in perithecia gevormd. De asci zijn 160-180 µm lang en 6-8 µm breed. De bonenvormige, unicellulaire ascosporen zijn donkerbruin en 11-15 x 5,5-7,5 µm groot.
