It was originally conceived by the Dutch art historian Henri van de Waal in the 1970s, and was further developed by a group of scholars after his death.

Iconclass — концепция классификации и систематизации сюжетов искусства и иконографии. Система была разработана под руководством Хенри ван де Ваала (нидерл. Henri van de Waal), после его смерти продолжает расширяться. В настоящее время Iconclass используется (нидерл. Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie, сокр. RKD) в Гааге, проектом MNEMOSYNE, Марбургским фотоархивом и другими небольшими проектами, ведутся работы с целью получения более широкого признания.
