It is the name of a king featured in the Mahabharata and the Puranas, the son of King Sumati of the Suryavamsha (Solar dynasty) and the grandson of Bharata. This king is best known for his legend of being rescued by Vishnu in the Gajendra Moksha and the episode of his fall from heaven after the exhaustion of his virtue, and his subsequent return.
