Ähnlich dem Nachwuchs der Säugetiere ist der menschliche Säugling für diese Ernährungsform kompetent durch angeborene Reflexe wie den Such- und den Saugreflex. Sie ermöglichen auch die Aufnahme flüssiger Nahrung durch Saugen an einer Babyflasche und so eine Ernährung mit Muttermilchersatz, wenn der Säugling nicht gestillt wird.
