Jacques Herbrand

Jacques Herbrand was a French mathematician and philosopher born in Paris in 1908. He studied at the University of Hamburg, the University of Göttingen, and the École Normale Supérieure. His doctoral advisor was Ernest Vessiot. Herbrand worked in the fields of proof theory, mathematical logic, and class field theory. He spoke and wrote in French.

His notable works include Herbrand's theorem, the Herbrand–Ribet theorem, the Herbrand universe, and the Herbrand interpretation. He also authored Badania nad teorją dowodu, Logical writings, Écrits logigues, Écrits logiques, and Le développement moderne de la théorie des corps algébriques. Herbrand died in Saint-Christophe-en-Oisans in 1931. His death was accidental.
