James Massey

James Lee Massey (1934–2013) was an American mathematician, computer scientist, engineer, and university teacher. Born in Wauseon, he was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of Notre Dame. He served as a university teacher at ETH Zurich and the University of California, Los Angeles. His field of work was information.

Massey was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and the National Academy of Sciences. He received the IEEE Alexander Graham Bell Medal, the Marconi Prize, the IEEE Fellow distinction, and the Claude E. Shannon Award. He was also recognized in the American Academy Arts Sciences collection. His student was Whitfield Diffie. He died of colorectal cancer in Copenhagen.
