James Phelps - born in Shreveport, Louisiana on April 2, 1932. Moved north to Chicago in the late 1950s were he participated in numerous gospel groups including the Holy Wonders which also featured Lou Rawls. He first recorded with the Clefs of Calvary, who released several singles on Tru-Sound with later 45s also appearing on Hob and Checker. Phelps joined The Soul Stirrers who by that time were well established as a toring act, and were recording for Sam Cooke's SAR label. <a href="https://w
