Blockx was a student of Peter Benoit at the Ecole de Musique, which later became the Flemish Music School. He later became a lecturer there and was adored by his students. He became the director of the Royal Flemish Music Conservatory in 1901 and was a member of the Royal Belgian Academy. His compositional style is a Belgian version of Romantic realism and he utilizes leitmotif, recitative and lyrical melodies.
