Jan de Vries wordt tijdens de hongerwinter van 1944 geboren in het kleine Friese dorpje Schrubrubberveen. Al op jonge leeftijd blijkt hij over bijzondere muzikale talenten te beschikken, en leert hij zichzelf het spelen op de vijfsnarige banjo aan. Menig volksdansfeest wordt opgevrolijkt door Jan en zijn virtuoze banjospel. Het nieuws over zijn bijzondere muzikale gaven reist snel, en in 1958 wordt hij ontdekt door Johnny Hoes.
