Joanna Russ

Joanna Russ was an American writer, novelist, essayist, and university teacher. Born in New York City on February 22, 1937, she resided in The Bronx and was educated at Cornell University and the Yale School of Drama. Her professional career included teaching positions at the University of Washington, Binghamton University, and the University of Colorado Boulder. Russ worked primarily in the fields of essay and gender studies, writing in English and identifying as an atheist.

Her notable work includes the feminist science fiction novel *The Female Man*. She received the Nebula Award for Best Short Story, the Hugo Award for Best Novella, the Tähtivaeltaja Award, and the Pilgrim Award. She was also nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novelette, the Nebula Award for Best Novel, the Locus Award for Best Novel, and the Hugo Award for Best Short Story. Other significant works include *Women's Fantastic Adventures* and *Microcosmic Tales*. Joanna Russ died of a stroke in Tucson on April 29, 2011.
