Joep Leerssen was born in Leiden in 1955, studied in Aachen, Dublin and Toronto, and took his PhD cum laude in 1986 at the University of Utrecht. Since 1991 he has held the Chair of Modern European Literature at the Universiteit van Amsterdam and have co-directed its programme in European Studies.
