John Burgoyne

John Burgoyne was a British politician, playwright, writer, and military personnel. Born in Sutton in 1722, he was educated at Westminster School and served in the British Army, achieving the ranks of lieutenant general and general. He participated in the Seven Years' War, the American Revolutionary War, the War of the Austrian Succession, and the Battle of Vila Velha.

Burgoyne wrote in English and produced works such as *The heiress*, *Richard Coeur de Lion an historical romance, adapted for theatrical representation*, *The maid of the oaks*, and *Die Vatergrille*. He was the father of John Fox Burgoyne. He died in London in 1792 and is buried at Westminster Abbey.
