John Hersey

John Hersey, born John Richard Hershey in Tianjin on 17 June 1914, was an American journalist, novelist, essayist, and writer. He was educated at Yale University, the Hotchkiss School, and the University of Cambridge, and was later employed by Yale University. His notable work was Hiroshima. Hersey spoke English and Chinese, and his native language was Chinese. He was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, and received the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel and the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award. His archives are held at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. He died in Key West on 24 March 1993 of cancer, from natural causes.
