John Lindley

John Lindley (1799–1865) was a British botanist, bryologist, university teacher, and writer. He served as a teacher at University College London and worked in the field of botany. His notable publications include *A key to structural, physiological, and systematic botany*, *Ladies' botany*, *School botany*, *descriptive botany, and vegetable physiology*, and *Rosarum monographia, or, A botanical history of roses*. He is also described as the "Father of modern orchidology."

Lindley was a member of the Royal Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Linnean Society of London, and the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences. He received the Royal Medal and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His works are held in collections at the Botanic Garden and Botanical Museum Berlin, the Muséum national d'histoire naturelle, the Natural History Museum, and the National Museum of Natural History. He died in Turnham Green and was buried in Acton.
