Joseph Riepel (b Hörschlag, 22 Jan 1709; d Regenshurg, 23 Oct 1782). Austrian theorist and composer. After working in Dresden and Poland, he served from the 1750s at the Regensburg court as violinist, composer and music director. His most important work is Anfangsgründe zur musikalischen Setzkunst (1752-68), a five-volume composition treatise based on the principle of arranging combinations and permutations of musical elements; it had a strong influence on H.
