Julius Wellhausen

Julius Wellhausen (1844–1918) was a German theologian, Hebraist, arabist, and biblical scholar. Born in Hamelin, he held citizenship in the Kingdom of Prussia and was educated at the University of Göttingen. His academic career included positions at the University of Greifswald, University of Marburg, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, and the University of Göttingen. He was a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities in Lower Saxony and the Royal Prussian Academy of Sciences.

Wellhausen’s field of work was oriental studies, and he adhered to liberal Christianity. He wrote in German, with notable works including *Prolegomena to the History of Israel*, *Prolegomena to the History of Ancient Israel*, *Das Evangelium Lucae*, and *Book of Psalms a New English Translation*. His archives are held at the Göttingen State and University Library. He died in Göttingen and is buried in the Göttingen City Cemetery.
