Kashmir Times

Kashmir Times is an independent news organization, supported by readers and concerned citizens. We publish in-depth coverage and analysis from Jammu & Kashmir, South Asia and rest of the world with focus on politics, conflict, democracy, human rights, environment, and much more. We are also building an open access online library containing books, documents, reports and research papers on J&K. The library is still in its initial stages. We believe that the preservation of local journalism is essential to maintaining a strong, informed, and engaged community. There is an urgent need to preserve stories about democratic rights, dignity, civic engagement, and community resilience in a deeply militarized zone; and disseminating this information on a global scale is even more important today.

Kashmir Times doesn't just report history; it lives it. Born in 1954 as a humble weekly, Kashmir Times grew into a daily with multiple editions, its pages spanning languages and generations, its voice carrying across one of the world's most contested and consequential regions. It survived decades of turmoil, violence, state repression, and threats from shadowy non-state actors. It did not bend. It stood firm. When the state finally forced its shutters down in 2022, it was precisely because that voice refused to be tamed. A year later, Kashmir Times returned in the digital multimedia form you find today: leaner but sharper and built for a new era. That stubborn will to survive is the inheritance of our founding editor, Ved Bhasin, who laid down a model of journalism rooted in courage, conscience, and an unshakeable commitment to truth. Through intimidation and inducements, through wars and curfews, he never traded principle for safety and benefits. His vision of peace, democracy, equality, and liberty is the living standard against which every word we publish is measured. When we say Kashmir, we mean all of it: the valley of the Kashmiri-speaking people, Jammu, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Mirpur, and Muzaffarabad. A land carved and contested by three nations, yet home to over 20 million people whose lives, loves, struggles, and stories belong to no government's narrative. They belong here. This is where we tell them. Our pages are aimed at speaking for the marginalized and voiceless communities, understanding issues holistically for shaping policy and transforming the conversation. Established in 1954, the Kashmir Times is the oldest English-language daily newspaper from Jammu and Kashmir. Ved Bhasin (1929-2015), hailed as the father of modern journalism in Jammu and Kashmir, led the newspaper as both founder and editor-in-chief. A renowned journalist and peace activist, Bhasin always championed press freedom, secular values, and human rights in the region. He firmly believed in dialogue and democracy as the way to resolve the long-standing problems in J&K and South Asia. As a journalist and peace activist, he confronted power with truth, choosing the difficult path of honest reporting in a region that has navigated many phases of severe repression. His unwavering defense of press freedom created spaces for voices that power sought to silence. We carry forward the profound legacy of Ved Bhasin, whose courage and conviction continue to light our path. Every story we publish, every investigation we pursue, and every voice we amplify carries forward Bhasin's vision of journalism as a force for positive change. In its new digital multi-media format (since November 2023), which replaces the previous print edition, we remain committed to his principles: unflinching secular values, unwavering defence of human rights, and upholding principles of democracy, liberty and equality.
