The larynx, commonly called the voice box, is an organ in your neck that plays three important roles: it helps you breathe, produces sound by controlling your vocal cords, and prevents food from entering your windpipe. Located just below where your pharynx splits into your trachea and esophagus, the larynx controls the pitch and volume of your voice, which is essential for speaking and singing.
