ولد ليوناردو شاشا في بلدة راكالموتو في جزيرة صقلية الإيطالية، وذلك في عام 1921م. كان أبوه يعمل في منجم كبريت، فاستوحى منه قسوة حياة الطبقة العاملة. كما ظهرت في كل رواياته محبة خاصة لجزيرة صقلية ولأهلها الذين انتمى إليهم. كتب شاشا حوالي 42 مؤلفًا من روايات وكتب نقد وشعر ومسرح وسياسة، كما تم إخراج حوالي عشرة أفلام سينمائية شهيرة استوحيت من مؤلفاته.
