Administrativamente, a cidade de Lichinga é um município, com um governo local eleito, uma área de 280 km² e uma população de 142 253 habitantes em 2007; e é também um distrito, uma unidade administrativa local do Estado central moçambicano criada em 2013 e que coincide geograficamente com o município de Lichinga. O antigo distrito de Lichinga tomou o nome de Chimbonila na mesma altura. O seu território constitui um enclave dentro do distrito de Chimbonila.
