Het Lineair B is een schriftvorm, die in 1900 werd ontdekt te Knossos in Centraal-Kreta door archeoloog Arthur Evans. Het noteert een archaïsche vorm van de Griekse taal, het zogenaamde Myceens. Lineair B, een in hoofdzaak syllabisch schrift, is opgebouwd uit 88 tekens en elk symbool staat voor een open lettergreep (ta, po, ...) of een klinker. Naast de syllabische tekens zijn er ook meer dan 100 ideogrammen die onder andere fysieke objecten, maten en gewichten voorstellen. Het Lineair B is gebaseerd op het Lineair A, waarmee een tot dusver niet-geïdentificeerde taal werd genoteerd.
