Un loft est un logement aménagé dans un ancien atelier, entrepôt, voire une usine. Ce choix permet de constituer des espaces entièrement ouverts et d'obtenir ainsi des volumes dégagés et éclairés, le plus souvent, par des fenêtres ou verrières percées dans les murs ou dans le toit (« sheds »). De plus, le loft garde l'empreinte, le souvenir visible de son ancienne destination (poutrelles métalliques dans une ancienne usine, voûtes dans une ancienne chapelle etc.).
