M. R. James

Montague Rhodes James was a British writer and art historian born in Dover in 1862. He worked as a children’s writer, prose writer, and ghost story author, with his professional career beginning in 1893. James was employed by King’s College and Eton College, where he was also educated. He was a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London, the British Academy, and the Medieval Academy of America.

His notable works include *Ghost Stories of an Antiquary*, *The ancient libraries of Canterbury and Dover*, *The apocryphal New Testament*, *The history of Lambeth Palace Library*, and *The Medieval Manuscript Library of Pembroke College, Cambridge*. He also wrote *More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary*. James received an honorary doctorate and was a Fellow of the British Academy. He died in Eton in 1936.
