M. R. James

M. R. James, born Montague Rhodes James in Dover in 1862, was a British writer, children’s writer, prose writer, and art historian. He wrote in English and was educated at King’s College. His professional career began in 1893, during which he was employed by King’s College and Eton College. He was a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London, the British Academy, and the Medieval Academy of America.

James is known for works in the genres of ghost story and children’s literature. His notable works include *Ghost Stories of an Antiquary*, *The ancient libraries of Canterbury and Dover*, *The apocryphal New Testament*, *The history of Lambeth Palace Library*, *The Medieval Manuscript Library of Pembroke College, Cambridge*, and *More Ghost Stories of an Antiquary*. He received an honorary doctorate and was a Fellow of the British Academy. He died in Eton on 12 June 1936.
