Maxentius was a Roman ruler from 306 to 312 who controlled Italy and North Africa and had the Senate's support, but was not accepted as a legitimate emperor by the other rulers of the Roman Empire at the time. His contested authority and relatively short reign ended with his death in 312, marking a significant moment of division in Roman imperial power.
