It is around 11 miles northeast of Colchester and is east of, and almost contiguous with, Manningtree. The parish consists of Mistley and New Mistley, both lying beside the Stour Estuary, Mistley Heath, about a mile to the south, and Horsley Cross at the southern end of the parish. The village is in the parliamentary constituency of Harwich and North Essex. The village has its own parish council. At the 2021 census the parish had a population of 2,956.
