The genus Montivipera was previously described as a subgenus of the genus Vipera, but it was elevated to full genus status in 2001 by Lenk, Kalayabina, Wink & Joger.

Die Bergottern (Montivipera) sind eine Gattung der Echten Vipern, die je nach Quelle bis zu acht Arten enthält. Die bekannteste Bergotter ist die Kleinasiatische Bergotter (Montivipera xanthina). Bergottern sind wie alle Vipern giftig, der Biss ist für Menschen jedoch nur sehr selten tödlich.
