From the mountains to the coast, the Division of Parks and Recreation administers a diverse system of state parks, natural areas, trails, lake, natural and scenic rivers, and recreation areas. The Division also supports and assists other recreation providers by administering grant programs for park and trail projects, and by offering technical advice for park and trail planning and development. The Division administers the North Carolina Trails System, North Carolina Natural and Scenic Rivers, and the Parks and Recreation Trust Fund. The North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation exists to inspire all through conservation, education, recreation. To conserve and protect representative examples of North Carolina's natural beauty, ecological features, and recreational and cultural resources within the state parks system. To provide educational opportunities that promote stewardship of the state's natural and cultural resources. To provide and promote safe, healthy, and enjoyable outdoor recreational opportunities throughout the state. The vision of the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation is to connect generations with nature through exceptional outdoor experiences. Friends of State Parks is a nonprofit citizen organization supporting, promoting, and advocating for the North Carolina State Parks system as a whole. The group helps provide funding for Junior Ranger and Youth in Parks – Environmental Education programs, as well as grants for state parks projects. The N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) manages, promotes, and enhances the things that people love about North Carolina – its diverse arts and culture, rich history, and spectacular natural areas. At more than 100 sites across the state, the department enhances education, stimulates economic development, improves public health, expands accessibility, and strengthens community resiliency.
