Stechmücken (Culicidae) sind eine Familie von Insekten innerhalb der Ordnung der Zweiflügler. Im bundesdeutschen und im Schweizer Hochdeutsch werden die Insekten als Mücken bezeichnet, im österreichischen Hochdeutsch als Gelsen. Weltweit gibt es mehr als 3796 Stechmückenarten. In Europa kommen 104 Arten vor, von denen fast alle auch in Mitteleuropa zu finden sind. Mit Hilfe eines spezialisierten Mundwerkzeuges, des stechend-saugenden Rüssels, können weibliche Stechmücken die Haut ihrer Wirte durchstechen und Blut saugen. Die mit der Blutmahlzeit aufgenommenen Proteine (besonders aus Hämoglobin und Albumin) und Eisen (aus Porphyrin-Verbindungen wie Häme) sind für die Produktion der Eier essentiell. Ansonsten ernähren sich weibliche Stechmücken wie auch die Männchen von Nektar und anderen zuckerhaltigen Pflanzensäften. Unterschiedliche Stechmückenarten können auf verschiedene Wirte oder Wirtsgruppen spezialisiert sein. Bestimmte Stechmücken sind als Krankheitsüberträger von Infektionskrankheiten, zum Beispiel Malaria oder Denguefieber, bedeutend. Die stammesgeschichtlich älteste bisher bekannte Stechmücke ist als Inkluse (Einschluss) in etwa 79 Millionen Jahre altem Bernsteinfossil erhalten. Eine ursprünglichere Schwesterart der Stechmücken ist in 90 bis 100 Millionen Jahre altem Bernstein überliefert.
