Murten (französisch Morat; im schweizerdeutschen Ortsdialekt [mʊːrtə, moːrtə]; frankoprovenzalisch ) ist eine politische Gemeinde und Hauptort des Seebezirks (französisch District du Lac) im Schweizer Kanton Freiburg. Zu Murten gehören auch die früher selbständigen Gemeinden Altavilla (eingegliedert 1991), Burg (1975), Büchslen (2013), Courlevon, Jeuss, Lurtigen, Salvenach (alle 2016), Gempenach, Galmiz sowie das ehemals bernische Clavaleyres (alle 2022). Murten bildet das regionale Kultur- und Wirtschaftszentrum des nördlichen Kantonsteils. Das mittelalterliche Zähringerstädtchen mit einer Ringmauer aus dem 13. bis 17. Jahrhundert und einer historischen Altstadt von nationaler Bedeutung liegt am nach ihm benannten Murtensee und war Schauplatz der Schlacht bei Murten.
