Non-binary refers to gender identities that fall outside the traditional categories of exclusively male or female, and people with these identities often experience a gender different from the sex they were assigned at birth. It matters because it represents how some people understand and express their gender in ways that don't fit conventional binary classifications, and understanding this helps recognize the diversity of human gender identity.
