La hierba de Guinea (Megathyrsus maximus) es una gramínea perenne rizomatosa, de la familia de las poáceas; de porte alto, desarrolla principalmente en macollos aisladas, que pueden alcanzar hasta 3 m de altura. La inflorescencia es una espiga abierta con ramificaciones laterales. Fue renombrada en 2003 como Megathyrsus maximus a partir de su basónimo Panicum maximum. Es una especie con amplio rango de adaptación desde el nivel del mar hasta los 1800 msnm, crece bien bajo suelos de alta fertilidad y soporta niveles moderados de sequía por su gran sistema radicular (por eso se ha llamado "siempre verde") (Bernal, 1988). Se usa generalmente para pastoreo, aunque puede ser utilizada para henificación.

Encyclopedic overview
Megathyrsus maximus, known as Guinea grass and green panic grass, is a large perennial bunch grass that is native to Africa and Yemen. It has been introduced in the tropics around the world. It has previously been called Urochloa maxima and Panicum maximum. It was moved to the genus Megathyrsus in 2003.
