Principalement connu pour son rôle de John Steed dans la série télévisée britannique Chapeau melon et bottes de cuir (The Avengers), qui lui a apporté la notoriété, il est aussi apparu dans d'autres séries à succès : Columbo, Magnum, Battlestar Galactica, Pour l'amour du risque ou Frasier, Arabesque.
