Paul Virilio

Paul Virilio was a French philosopher, writer, urban planner, and sociologist. Born Paul Charles Viriglio in the 8th arrondissement of Paris on January 4, 1932, he was educated at the University of Paris and the École nationale supérieure des arts appliqués et des métiers d'art. He studied under Raymond Aron, Vladimir Jankélévitch, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. His professional career included teaching at the European Graduate School and the Special School of Architecture.

Virilio’s work focused on urbanism, architecture, philosophy, and opinion journalism. He authored 139 works, including *Geschwindigkeit und Politik*, *A máquina de visão*, *Le pourrissement des sociétés*, and *The Accident of Art*. His writings are held in the collection of the Musée National d'Art Moderne, and his archives are preserved at the Institute for Contemporary Publishing Archives. He died of cardiovascular disease, a natural cause, in Rueil-Malmaison on September 10, 2018.
