Benannt ist sie nach dem Florentiner Advokaten Leopoldo Pelli-Fabbroni, einem Freund des Erstbeschreibers Giuseppe Raddi.Pellia ist die einzige Gattung in der Familie Pelliaceae, diese ist wiederum die einzige Familie der Ordnung Pelliales.
