Der Messerfuß (Pelobates cultripes) ist als Vertreter der Europäischen Schaufelfußkröten (Pelobates) ein naher Verwandter der Knoblauchkröte. Während diese eine vor allem in Mittel- und Osteuropa verbreitete Art ist, nimmt der Messerfuß ihre „Stelle“ in Südwesteuropa ein.
