Peter H. Raven

Peter Hamilton Raven (1936–2026) was an American botanist, curator, researcher, and environmentalist. Born in Shanghai, he was educated at the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of California, Los Angeles. Raven worked at Stanford University, Washington University in St. Louis, and the Missouri Botanical Garden. He resided in St. Louis, where he died, and had four children.

Raven was a member of the Royal Society, the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters. He received the Guggenheim Fellowship, the MacArthur Fellows Program award, the Volvo Environment Prize, and the Tyler Prize for Environmental Achievement. He was also recognized in the collections of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and for the National Medal of Science.

His notable works include *An introduction to continental drift*, *Chromosome numbers in Compositae*, *Polypodiaceae Through Lycopodiaceae*, and *Two new species and some nomenclatural changes in Oenothera subg. Hartmannia (Onagraceae)*. He also authored *Environment 9e HSB W/WPLSC ETXC (1yr)*. Raven wrote in English and specialized in the field of botany.
