La sua opera più conosciuta è la trasposizione cinematografica de Il Signore degli Anelli di J. R. R. Tolkien, divisa in una trilogia, ed è tra i maggiori incassi nella storia del cinema. Nel 2005 ha diretto il film King Kong, remake dell'omonimo film del 1933. Nel corso degli anni ha prodotto diversi altri film, tra cui District 9, Le avventure di Tintin - Il segreto dell'Unicorno e la trasposizione cinematografica de Lo Hobbit di J. R. R. Tolkien. Quest'ultima saga, strutturata come trilogia, è il prequel de Il Signore degli Anelli, di cui Jackson è regista, sceneggiatore e produttore. L'8 dicembre 2014 il suo nome è stato inserito nella Hollywood Walk of Fame di Boulevard.
