الفرعون، جرى العرف والعادة والاصطلاح في العصور الحديثة على إطلاق لقب فرعون على الحاكم في مصر القديمة، وذلك جريا على العادة في إطلاق الألقاب على ملوك العالم القديم، فعلى سبيل المثال يطلق على كل من ملك الفرس بكسرى برغم أن من تسمى بذلك هو ملك من ملوكهم، ثم جرت العادة بعد ذلك على تسمية كل ملك فارسي بكسرى، كما تسمى ملوك الروم بقيصر، وملوك الحبشة بالنجاشي، وهكذا وجريا على العادة فإن الناس في العصور الحديثة اصطلحوا على تلقيب ملوك مصر القدماء بـالفراعنة، وكان الحاكم في مصر القديمة الموحدة يلبس (تاج أحمر رمز الشمال وتاج أبيض رمز الجنوب متحدين في تاج واحد دلالة على حكم القطرين وتسلطه عليهما)، أي أنه يحكم مصر العليا ومصر السفلى.والخلاصة أن كلمة فرعون ربما قد أصبحت تستخدم استخداما شائعا في العصور الحديثة كلقب للحاكم في مصر القديمة لأسباب ترجع إلى الميول العقائدية ومحاولات التفسير التوراتية من زاوية واحدة، على أن التحقيق اللغوي للفظة يظل بعيدا كل البعد عن حقيقة تلقب الحكام المصريين بهذا اللقب.
