In chemistry, a phosphate is an anion, salt, functional group or ester derived from a phosphoric acid. It most commonly means orthophosphate, a derivative of orthophosphoric acid, phosphoric acid .
A phosphate is a chemical compound derived from phosphoric acid, and it's one of the most common forms found in nature and industry. Phosphates matter because they're essential ingredients in fertilizers, detergents, food additives, and biological processes in living organisms.
