Members of the same phyle were known as symphyletai () meaning 'fellow tribesmen'. Fyle (Oudgrieks: φυλή, phulè: stam, ras, volk, van φύεσθαι, phuesthai: "afstammen") was een term voor een groep waartoe men behoorde als burger in een oud-Griekse polis, waardoor men lid werd van een clan. Uit deze stamverbanden ontwikkelden zich later de regionale districten, die de grondslag voor de indeling van het leger zouden vormen (Zie Athene, geschiedenis van Athene).
