Een gevangenis (of, afhankelijk van de context, penitentiaire inrichting, vroeger ook: tuchthuis of cachot) is een gebouw of gebouwencomplex om gedetineerden een gevangenisstraf uit te laten zitten. De gevangenis heeft in de volksmond veel bijnamen, zoals: bajes, bak, cel, lik, nor, petoet, jilla en traliezicht. In bewaring gesteld zijn heet vaak zitten, brommen of bakken. De gedetineerden of gevangenen zijn veroordeeld voor een of meer overtredingen en/of misdrijven. Een rechter bepaalt of iemand mag worden opgesloten in een gevangenis. In geval van civiele gijzeling zal iemand door de gerechtsdeurwaarder in een huis van bewaring geplaatst worden. In Nederland vallen de gevangenissen onder de Dienst Justitiële Inrichtingen; in België onder het , een dienst van de Federale Overheidsdienst Justitie.
