Its one species, described by Philogène Auguste Joseph Duponchel in 1836, is Pterothrixidia rufella. It is found in France, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, the Balkan Peninsula, Ukraine, Russia, Kazakhstan, Turkey and Iran.
