The common names of this genus are ridged frogs and grass frogs. This type of family have many different characteristics such as the species, Ptychadena neumanni who have long hindlimbs and a large ear drum compared to the Ptychadena erlangeri, for example. They also have a unique bone structure which is a fusion between the presacral vertebrae and sacrum.

Ptychadena is een geslacht van kikkers uit de familie Ptychadenidae. De groep werd voor het eerst wetenschappelijk beschreven door George Albert Boulenger in 1917. Oorspronkelijk werd de wetenschappelijke naam Limnophilus gebruikt. Er zijn 49 soorten die voorkomen in Afrika; in Egypte en delen van Afrika ten zuiden van de Sahara. Op Madagaskar, de Seychellen en de Mascarenen zijn verschillende soorten geïntroduceerd.
